Shavige Uppit

Hello Everybody…

Yes ! My blog is back from the dead with the tangy lemony Shavige Uppit ... :D

Check it out!

Story so far…

Mum sensed stiff competition and avoided encroachment of one place she solely rules :P And therefore my cooking spell ended as soon as my blog gained popularity :P

Now after months later, Mum flew to phirang land leaving me n appaji high and dry L

So the cold war ends J and here I am once again walking into enemy territory ..welcomed this time and freedom to cook as I wish. However, you know how you shud be always careful wat your wishing for… coz now I hvta cook 3 times a day L

Shavige Uppit seemed to be the most simple brkfast I could think of with fading memories from my cooking days.. It turned out better than I expected though. Appaji ws kush and commented on how mum could never prepare it this way (heheeeee…wait until she hears this)

Ready to try??

Ingredients:

Vermicelli – 2 cups (serves 2)

For Seasoning:

Oil – 3 tsps

Mustard Seeds – 1 tsps

Urad dhal/black gram – 1 tsps

Channa dhal/bengal gram – 1 tsps

Green/Red chilles – 2 slit

Groundnuts/Peanuts – 2 tsps

Few Curry leaves

Onions/Shallots– 2 (thinly sliced)

To add after above:

Capsicum/Bell pepper (thinly sliced)

Peas – 2 tsps (optional)

Tumeric – 1 tsps

Finely chopped coriander

Squeeze of lime

Salt to taste

Method of preparation:

1. Set a cup of water to boil. In the meantime, fry vermicelli with a tea spoon of oil. Some brands are already fried, so watch out for these instructions on the vermicelli pack. I prefer using fried ones because you may tend to burn them.

2. Important: Pour the hot water using a large spoon on the fried shavige and close a lid over it. The steam from this hot water is enough to cook it. Leave it for 2-3 mins. Sprinkle more hot water if u think its required. But NEVER Never attempt to put all the vermicelli at once into the boiling water as in many blogs. This will make it soggy and aste amele no breakfast.

3. While it cooks, keep a pan for seasoning and add the above one after the other in that order.

4. Add the veggies and turmeric and let it cook for 1 minute. Now move the cooked vermicelli into this pan and sprinkle salt. Mix the contents evenly.

5. Finally, throw some finely chopped coriander and a squeeze of lime. Leave it closed with the lid for couple of mins for the flavours to blend. Serve hot immediately.
